Decks, Patios & Pergolas in Austin & Dallas, TX

Custom decks, covered patios, pergolas, and outdoor kitchens for Austin and Dallas backyards. Cedar, composite, and ipe — engineered and detailed to handle real Texas heat, sun, and seasonal storms.

About HN

Austin and Dallas’s go-to team for outdoor living.

Outdoor living is where HN Construction & Remodeling started — 14 years and several hundred backyards later, it’s still the work we love most. Cedar, composite, ipe, pergolas, covered patios, outdoor kitchens — all designed and built by our in-house crew.

Our designs start from how your backyard actually gets used: where the sun is in July, how water moves on your lot, where the grill goes, where the kids end up, what view you’re trying to frame. The plan comes from that — not a template.

Schedules are written and dated before the first board is cut. Pricing is line-by-line — every fastener, every railing, every linear foot. Changes you request are quoted in writing first.

Decks and pergolas live outside in real Texas weather. We over-build the parts no one sees so the parts you do see last for a decade or more.

Our Commitment

Three things you can count on, every project.

Precision Planning

Every layout, material, and finish is finalized in 3D before demo begins. You see the project before you live it — and we don’t start swinging hammers until you’ve approved the plan.

Honest Communication

Weekly written progress updates and a single point of contact for the entire build. No “your guy’s out today” surprises and no chasing for status.

Built to Last

Materials, fasteners, and detailing chosen specifically for Austin and Dallas conditions — heat, sun, summer storms, and the way Texans actually use a home.

Why HN

Why outdoor-living clients choose us.

Most deck and pergola failures aren’t material failures — they’re installation failures. The wrong fasteners, no end-grain sealing, poor drainage, undersized footings. Two years in, the deck cups and the railing wobbles. We see it constantly.

Our crew installs decks the same way every time: properly engineered substructure, hot-dip or stainless fasteners, real end-grain treatment, drainage planned from the joists down. Combined with the right material for your sun exposure, the result is an outdoor space that’s still tight, flat, and beautiful five summers later.

Challenges We Solve

Challenges we solve every week.

The six things outdoor-living clients run into most often — and how our process addresses each.

Texas heat, sun, and weather durability

Material choice and detailing matter more here than anywhere else. We choose decking, fasteners, and finishes specifically for Austin and Dallas exposure — and over-build the parts that take the most weather.

Wood that warps, rots, or splinters

Most wood failures are installation failures: wrong fasteners, no end-grain sealing, poor airflow under the deck. We follow proven detailing that keeps cedar and hardwood looking right for years.

Drainage and grading on sloped Austin/Dallas lots

Water management starts with the substructure. We engineer footings, slopes, and drainage so water moves where it should — away from your foundation and your deck.

Integrating decks with existing landscaping

We work around mature trees (no surprise root cuts), preserve drainage paths, and design around existing patios, pools, and beds so the new structure feels like it belongs.

Shade and heat management

Pergolas, louvered roofs, shade sails, and ceiling fans — we design for usable shade in July, not just photo-ready shade in March. Orientation and pergola spacing matter a lot here.

Pergola structural and code requirements

Larger pergolas, attached pergolas, and any structure with wiring usually require permits and engineering. We handle both — including wind-load calcs for the storms that come through every spring.

Everything Included

Everything included in an HN outdoor living project.

Design built around how you actually live

Every outdoor living project starts with how you really use the space — not a templated floor plan. We sketch options, then bring them to life with 3D renderings so you can see the finished result before any work begins.

Two or three design directions, refined together until the layout, materials, and lighting all feel right.

End-to-end project coordination

One in-house team manages the entire project — design, scheduling, trades, materials, and inspections. You get one point of contact and weekly progress updates.

  • Planning and 3D design
  • Plumbing, electrical, HVAC
  • Permits and inspections
  • Custom material orders
  • Install and finish work
  • Integration with the rest of your home

Transparent line-by-line pricing

Our proposals are written line-by-line — every cabinet, every tile, every fixture. No vague “allowances” that balloon mid-project. The number you sign is the number you pay (changes you request are quoted in writing before they happen).

Licensed & insured craftsmen on every project

Our crew is in-house — not a rotating cast of subcontractors. Every person on your project is licensed and insured under HN Construction & Remodeling, and an owner is on-site through every milestone.

Outdoor kitchen integration

A great outdoor kitchen isn’t just a grill on a deck — it’s a coordinated build. Gas, water, electrical, drainage, ventilation, and durable materials that hold up to Texas weather. We design and integrate it as part of the deck or patio so it feels original to the space.

Three Texas summers in and our cedar deck still looks new. They sealed it right, the substructure is over-built, and the railing detailing is beautiful.

Our covered patio with outdoor kitchen completely changed how we use the backyard. We hosted Thanksgiving outside last year — in November, in Texas.

The pergola handled the May storms beautifully — clearly engineered, not just nailed together. They pulled the permit and did everything by the book.

We had a steep slope and they made it look effortless. Multi-level cedar deck with built-in seating. Best money we’ve spent on the house.

FAQ

Decks, patios & pergolas — questions we hear most.

Composite vs. cedar vs. hardwood — which decking is best in Texas?
All three work here, but for different reasons. Composite (Trex, TimberTech) is virtually maintenance-free and great for hot decks. Cedar is beautiful and ages well if sealed properly every 2–3 years. Ipe and other hardwoods are the longest-lasting but most expensive. We help you choose based on use, sun exposure, and how much maintenance you want to do.
Do pergolas need a permit in Austin or Dallas?
Sometimes. Free-standing pergolas under a certain size and height often don’t need permits, but attached pergolas, larger structures, and any structure with electrical typically do. We confirm this with the local jurisdiction before starting and pull whatever is required.
How much maintenance does a deck or pergola need?
Composite: a wash twice a year. Cedar: clean and re-seal every 2–3 years. Ipe: oil annually if you want to keep the rich color, or let it weather to silver-gray with no maintenance. Pergolas follow the same rules as the wood they’re built from.
How well do these structures hold up to Texas weather?
Very well, when they’re built right. The keys are a properly engineered substructure (no shortcuts on footings or fasteners), correct flashing and drainage, and the right material for the exposure. We over-build the parts no one sees so the parts you do see last.
Can you build over an existing concrete patio?
Often, yes. We can build a low-profile deck over existing concrete using sleepers and the right substructure design — saves you a demolition cost and adds a warmer surface. We assess the slab condition and drainage first.
Can a deck be roofed or covered later?
Yes — and if you think you might want a cover or pergola down the road, we engineer the deck for that load now so it’s ready when you are. Adding a cover later is much easier when the deck was designed to support it from day one.
Can you integrate a new deck with an existing pool?
We do a lot of this. Wood, composite, or stone surrounds; raised platforms; built-in seating that wraps the pool — all coordinated with existing pool decking, equipment, and drainage.
What does a typical outdoor living project cost?
Cedar decks typically run $30–$55 per square foot installed. Composite runs $40–$70/sq ft. Pergolas start around $4,500 for a small free-standing structure and run higher for larger custom builds. Outdoor kitchens vary widely with appliance and counter selections. We give you a fixed-scope proposal before any work begins.
